CHAPTER 18

David Strikes the Nations

1And it came to pass after these things, that David struck the Philistines, and put them to flight. And he took Gath and her towns from the hand of the Philistines. 2And he struck Moab; and Moab became bondservant to David, bringing gifts. 3And David struck Hadarezer king of Zobah at Hamath, in his going to establish his hand over the river Euphrates. 4And David first took from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horses, and twenty thousand men footmen. And David disabled all the chariots, and left of them a hundred chariots. 5And Syria came from out of Damascus to help Hadarezer king of Zobah. And David struck among the Syrian -- twenty and two thousand men. 6And David placed a detachment in Syria near Damascus. And they were to David as servants bringing gifts. And the lord preserved David in all wherever he went. 7And David took the collars of gold things which were upon the servants of Hadarezer, and brought them into Jerusalem. 8And from Tibhath, and from the chosen cities of Hadarezer, David took [3brass 2much 1exceedingly]. Of it Solomon made the [2sea 1brass], and the columns, and the items of brass. 9And [4heard 1Tou 2king 3of Hamath] that David struck all the force of Hadarezer king of Zobah. 10And he sent Hadoram his son to king David to ask him the things for peace, and to congratulate him for of which he waged war against Hadarezer, and for striking him; because [4man 3a warlike 1Tou 2was] with Hadarezer -- and all the items of gold, and of silver, and of brass. 11And these [3sanctified 1king 2David] to the lord, with the silver and the gold which he took from all the nations -- from Edom, and Moab, and from the sons of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek. 12And Abishai son of Zeruiah struck the Edomite in the valley of salts -- eighteen thousand. 13And he placed in Edom a detachment of soldiers. And [4were 1all 2the 3Edomites] servants to David. And the lord preserved David in all wherever he went. 14And David reigned over all Israel, and he was executing judgment and righteousness to all his people. 15And Joab son of Zeruiah was over the military; and Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder; 16and Zadok son of Ahitub, and Abimelech son of Abiathar, were priests; and Shavsha was scribe; 17and Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethite and the Phelethite; and the sons of David were the first successors of the king.
